Numerical investigations on the stability of flame balls

The paper is concerned with the numerical simulation of two– and three–dimensional flame balls. In the two–dimensional case we use a Galerkin–type discretization in an adaptive basis of orthogonal wavelets. Therewith the solution is represented by means of a reduced basis being adapted in each time step. For the three–dimensional simulations we employ a classical Fourier pseudospectral method implemented on a massively parallel computer. The algorithms are applied to compute the evolution of thermo–diffusive flame balls. In particular, the influence of the Lewis number, the initial radius and the strength of radiative losses is studied. The results show different scenarios, such as splitting and extinction of the flame balls. For the two–dimensional case we also obtain quasi–stationary flame balls.
